Many have weighed in on the problem of obesity. It has, undoubtedly, earned its name “obesity epidemic.” The problem continues to flare out of control even amidst increased awareness.

When considering the cause of the obesity epidemic. It is impossible to point the finger at any one item. There are multiple causes. One possible cause is genetics. Many find it obvious that obesity and/or weight issues run in families. To these people it is an obvious conclusion that bad genetics are the cause of obesity. Children who have obese parents have a 25 to 30% chance of becoming obese themselves. This leads some to indicate that the obesity epidemic was caused simply by biology.

Other experts suggest that the obesity epidemic is caused by not one or the other, but a combination of two factors. Genes play a role. But children are also learning bad behavior in the home. They are learning to eat unhealthy foods and develop negative lifestyle habits regarding their activity levels and their eating choices. These learned behaviors result in increased weight which results in negative health.

Cultural factors that increase the chances for obesity are prevalent in today’s society. They include: high sugar foods, high fat foods, little to no exercise, etc. Today’s society has created a love of fast food, a desire for large portion sizes, a tendency for social eating, and a dependence upon drive thrus and eating out.

The notable increase in the amount of emotional and mental problems that plague members of today’s society also lend a helping hand to the obesity epidemic. Mental issues such as: anxiety, anger, depression, stress and boredom can all increase the likelihood for overeating which leads to further weight gain/issues. And for causes that cannot be specifically pinpointed these mental issues are more prevalent in today’s society than ever before.

The cause of the obesity epidemic cannot be pinpointed to one particular habit or issue. The epidemic was created from a wide group of bad habits and negative social structures. In order to eliminate the problem society’s rules must change. Individuals must make long term changes to their daily eating and cooking habits in order to make lasting change to their weight and therefore, their health.
